The original left cam chain tensioner piston allows the oil to drain out of the tensioner housing when the engine is shut off. As a result when you first start your engine, you hear a momentary clanking noise from the left cylinder.
This is the left cam chain smacking into the tensioner rail until the oil pressure builds up behind the tensioner piston. Over time this can cause the tensioner rail to break which is a costly repair.
This new-style tensioner has a check valve inside the piston that does not allow the oil to drain out after you shut off your engine. As a result, the tensioner always has pressure against the rail, and you will no longer hear the clanking sound on startup.This protects your tensioner rail from breakage. This new-style tensioner was fitted as standard equipment beginning with the Hexhead models.
The new style tensioner is installed with a 15mm wrench, while the old style uses a 17mm wrench. This information can help you determine if yours has already been updated.
